Mike Bertram, referred to as “Mr. B” in his classroom, has been teaching for 25+ years and is currently a 3rd grade teacher in South Plainfield, New Jersey. He uses the power of poetry to help students learn from each other, embrace their differences, build self-esteem, and search for their special hidden voice. Mr. B loves that poetry not only allows his students to express how they feel but allows him to see the world through their eyes.
In 2002, he started performing spoken word poetry. He was a 2005 Nuyorican Poets Cafe Slam Team member. In 2018, he was the Jersey Poetry Movement Spoken Word Pioneer recipient for his work in the New Jersey poetry community. Since then, he has performed nationwide at colleges, universities, schools, libraries, and poetry festivals. He also conducts creative writing workshops for students K-8. In 2019, he was named Artist of the Year in his hometown of Rahway, NJ. As the Program Director for A.C.P Arts Ink, he has partnered with several organizations in Rahway to provide an artistic outlet for students and adults to unite people and bridge cultural gaps.
